Flames of Hope

On Saturday night we went to our first and last Waterfire of the year. It was called Flames of Hope, sponsored by the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. Each year they organize a wonderful event for the whole family. The kids and I enjoyed a great band called Brass Attack (too loud, though), the torch parade from the pink-lit statehouse all the way down to the Providence River to light the waterfires, all sorts of food options, blinking pink ribbons and balloons everywhere, and the best part, the Mastery Martial Arts performance. We waited in a tight crowd for a long time to be able to see our friends take part in this event. They were all so impressive and they broke 1,000 boards ($5 donation for each board) for breast cancer in 2.5 minutes. It was thrilling to watch them try to beat the clock! The broken boards were then brought down to the water to feed the fires. The only drawback was that it was so crowded! What a great cause for such a festive celebration! We're looking forward to next year.
